The Volusia Family Resource Center (VFRC) is a full-scale assessment center that offers high quality services to juveniles and their families. The objective is to divert as many juveniles as possible away from being managed by the juvenile justice system, while ensuring the public’s safety, and offering comprehensive assessments of needs, early intervention, and referrals to services tailored to meet each family’s needs, while reducing the need for future law enforcement contacts.
It should be noted, this is a County of Volusia facility run by the Volusia Sheriff’s Office (VSO).
Utilizing evidence-based strategies to improve community and law enforcement relations, the VSO has implemented the VFRC for prevention, intervention, and diversion of potentially troubled juveniles. The VFRC model provides critical prevention, intervention, assessment, and services to juveniles, and their families, who may be engaging in behavior that could result in the involvement of the criminal justice system. The VFRC will partner with the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ), Volusia County Schools (VCS), Halifax Behavioral Services (HBS), and the Children’s Home Society of Florida (CHS) to reduce recidivism, and minimize duplicated efforts, while increasing the accountability of providers serving the community.
Furthermore, the Volusia Family Resource Center will be a resource for facilitating better relationships between juveniles, their families, and the law enforcement community in Volusia County.
Objectives to address include:
- Reducing juvenile crime
- Ungovernable youth
- Missing persons
- Aggressive, defiant and/or violent behaviors
- Mental health
- Those at risk of entering the juvenile justice system
- Parents in need of services
