DELTONA MOTORCYCLIST KILLED IN HEAD-ON CRASH; INVESTIGATION CONTINUES

A 73-year-old Deltona resident was killed in a head-on collision Saturday night when the driver of a pickup truck turned into his path.

The crash occurred at 8:20 p.m. as John Candeto traveled south on Deltona Boulevard on his 2001 Harley-Davidson motorcycle in the right lane.

The driver of a 2013 Ford F-150 was driving north on Deltona Boulevard in the left turn lane. He told deputies he did not see the oncoming motorcycle and turned into his path near Gaynor Court.

Candeto was critically injured in the crash and was transported to Central Florida Regional. He died later of his injuries.

This investigation is continuing. More information will be provided when it becomes available.

Update: Feb. 28, 2022

The driver who caused an October traffic crash that killed a Deltona motorcyclist is being charged with DUI manslaughter.

The investigation into the Oct. 9 crash indicated that Devin T. Barksdale, 30 (DOB 7/12/1991), of Sanford, was impaired the night his Ford F-150 hit 73-year-old John Candeto’s motorcycle. Deputies on scene noticed signs of impairment, and lab tests of Barksdale’s blood, drawn about 3 hours after the crash, later indicated alcohol content of .088 and .089 g/100mL.

Barksdale, who is already in custody without bond in the Volusia County Branch Jail on charges of violation of probation and possession of fentanyl, will be served today with a warrant charging him with DUI manslaughter and DUI with property damage.
