Seville man taken into custody following hours-long standoff

A standoff with an armed barricaded subject Sunday night at a Seville home ended without injuries when the man surrendered to VSO SWAT deputies after more than six hours of announcements and negotiations.

Around 8:09 p.m., a deputy responded to the house at 2170 Lake Juanita Road, Seville, to conduct a well-being check on the man after concerns were raised about his mental stability and care of the animals on the property. Deputies were advised the man had been showing strange behavior, and it was believed he had been on a 40-day fast. 

When the deputy made contact with the suspect, Austin Mowery (DOB: 01/18/1998), Mowery was rambling incoherently before going back inside the house. Moments later, Mowery pointed a shotgun at the deputy from a window. The deputy fired multiple rounds and took cover. Neither the deputy nor the suspect were injured. 

At 2:32 a.m. Mowery surrendered and was taken into custody. Mowery was booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail on a charge of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer where he is being held without bond.
