Detectives are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred overnight in the DeLand area.
Deputies and DeLand police responded around 10:47 p.m. Tuesday to a call about a trespassing complaint that escalated to a shooting at 127 N. Boulevard Court, DeLand. The caller reported to dispatch he had shot the trespasser.
The caller remained on scene and was standing at the side of the road with his hands up when deputies arrived. The man he shot was lying in the driveway with multiple gunshot wounds, and was pronounced deceased on scene.
The initial investigation indicates the shooter lives in a camper at the address. The deceased used to stay off and on at the property, but was no longer allowed to stay there. On Tuesday night, he was found asleep in the laundry room of the house, which led to an argument and the initial trespassing call.
During the argument, the shooter said the trespasser advanced on him despite warnings to get back or he would be shot. The shooter then fired several rounds.
The investigation into the incident is continuing at the time of this post.
