Update: After a thorough, weeklong investigation by VSO detectives, a suspect from the Atlanta area has been arrested near Detroit in last week’s shooting of a Deltona couple in their home.
Malik J. McKenzie, 29 (DOB 2/20/1995), of Dallas, Ga., an ex-boyfriend of one of the victims, is charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count of armed burglary in the shooting around 3 a.m. last Monday, Aug. 19.
Detectives used a variety of video footage, License Plate Reader technology, and other evidence to identify McKenzie as the masked shooter caught on video outside the victims’ home just before the shooting. Both victims survived.
Early in the investigation, detectives found another surveillance camera in the neighborhood that captured a suspect vehicle, a dark Nissan Altima bearing a license plate that turned out to be assigned to a different vehicle. Detectives tracked down that vehicle, a van in Deltona, and learned its tag was stolen on July 26. Detectives then tracked down surveillance video that captured the suspect stealing the tag.
The suspect in that video matched the appearance of the shooter caught on video outside the victims’ home.
Analysts at the Volusia County Crime Center (VC3) researched License Plate Readers in the area, looking for Nissan Altimas with the same description as the suspect vehicle. They identified one with a Georgia tag registered to McKenzie and retraced its route through Volusia County (both with its Georgia tag and its stolen Florida tag), including visits to a gas station and a McDonald’s, with McKenzie identifiable on video at each stop.
Detectives also obtained digital evidence linking McKenzie to the shooting.
After detectives obtained a warrant for McKenzie’s arrest, police in Southfield, Mich., located him and his vehicle Saturday and took him into custody. The stolen license plate was also recovered during the arrest.
McKenzie remains in custody in Michigan pending extradition to Volusia County.
