Armed subject fatally shot during traffic stop of wanted vehicle

An armed subject traveling in a vehicle wanted in connection with a violent incident in DeLand was fatally shot by law enforcement Friday afternoon.

At about 1:30 p.m. investigators were working on an unrelated burglary investigation in the area when they observed a vehicle believed to be connected to an August 17th incident where two victims were approached by an unknown suspect who pointed a gun at them and pulled the trigger multiple times.

The officers conducted a traffic stop on the White Dodge Charger at W. Euclid Avenue and S. Woodland Boulevard and observed three occupants inside.

Shots were fired by a DeLand Police Sergeant and a Volusia Sheriff’s Detective, wounding 20-year-old Jayvion Barthel. Officers immediately rendered first aid and emergency personnel responded; however; he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.  The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the circumstances of the entire incident and are now the lead agency investigating the shooting.

The initial investigation indicates Barthel was in possession of a firearm. The weapon was recovered from the floorboard of the backseat where Barthel was sitting. The driver of the vehicle and the front seat passenger have been detained pending further investigation.

During the August 17th incident, the two victims were not injured as the weapon malfunctioned before the suspect ran off. Since the incident, investigators have been working to identify the person(s) involved in the attempted shooting. They developed leads including the make and model of the vehicle involved which was a White Dodge Charger.

At this time, investigators are still working to determine who the individual was, who brandished the firearm and tried to shoot the two victims, along with a second individual who was present that morning as well.

A cash reward is available for anyone with information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the gunman.

A DPD Sergeant and VSO detective involved in today’s shooting incident have been placed on administrative leave which is protocol during an officer-involved shooting.
