ACCREDITATION ASSESSMENT TEAM INVITES PUBLIC COMMENTS ON COMMUNICATIONS CENTER

An assessment team from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA®), will be conducting a virtual assessment of the Volusia Sheriff’s Office Communications Center on May 11 and 12 to examine the agency’s policies and procedures, management, operations and support services.

The state-of-the-art Communications Center, a $21 million facility that became fully operational in 2013, provides a unified communications service to all public safety agencies in Volusia County. Every 911 and non-emergency call for law enforcement, fire or medical service is handled by the telecommunicators and call-takers at the Sheriff’s Office Communications Center.

Sheriff Mike Chitwood said CALEA’s Public Safety Communications Accreditation Program (PSCAP®), an intensive Communications-specific premier accreditation program, will ensure the agency is following the nation’s best practices in serving the community’s public safety needs.

As part of the assessment, agency personnel and members of the community are invited to offer comments directly to the CALEA assessment team by calling 386-254-4030 on Monday, May 11, 2020 between the hours of 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Telephone comments are limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA Standards. A copy of the standards is available at the Volusia Sheriff’s Office. The local contact is Sandy Shields at 386-736-5961, ext. 12107.

Accreditation reviews are done every four years. In the interim period, the agency must submit annual reports, and participate in annual remote web-based assessments attesting continued compliance with those standards under which it was initially accredited.
