VOLUSIA DEPUTIES, DELAND PD, DCF PULL 16-YEAR-OLD FROM LEDGE

Volusia sheriff’s deputies, DeLand police and a case worker from the state Department of Children and Families took quick action today to rescue a 16-year-old boy who pushed off a ledge to jump from the top of a courthouse parking garage.

The incident around 1 p.m. ended with no injuries to the 16-year-old other than some abrasions from the concrete.

He was on the ledge at the top of the parking garage after a hearing that upset him. He threatened to jump, and requested to speak to courthouse Deputy Wayne Jones, who was in the courtroom for the hearing. Jones joined several other units (VSO, DeLand PD and DCF) at the scene. When he pushed off the ledge, everyone rushed in to pull him back to safety.

The 16-year-old was taken into protective custody under the Baker Act. The incident was captured on Volusia Sheriff’s Sgt. Steven Edgecomb’s body camera, and a redacted portion of footage is posted here.
