Crime Spree Interrupted: Two Arrested In Burglary, Auto Thefts; Stolen Guns Recovered (Video Provided)

CRIME SPREE INTERRUPTED: TWO ARRESTED IN BURGLARY, AUTO THEFTS; STOLEN GUNS RECOVERED      

Two suspects in a crime spree that included a burglary to an occupied home, two auto thefts, three vehicle break-ins and multiple stolen guns are in custody today after the victim, Volusia County sheriff’s deputies and police tracked them to a Daytona Beach Shores hotel.

Additional charges are likely against 19-year-old Kelly Shaw (DOB 8/8/1998) and 14-year-old Nathan Barker (DOB 10/4/2002) as police in Edgewater and New Smyrna Beach investigate their potential involvement in additional cases in their cities – another burglary of an occupied home and a series of car breaks, some with guns stolen. And sheriff’s detectives who interviewed the suspects believe they had plans to use their stolen guns to commit armed robberies later in the night.

Around 5:30 a.m. Thursday, a resident on the 3800 block of Cardinal Boulevard, Port Orange, woke up and discovered his home had been burglarized. He immediately noticed items missing – including a shotgun, a Corvette convertible and a Chevrolet Silverado.

The victim checked his video surveillance system and saw two suspects inside his house overnight. The cameras facing out through the front of his house also captured the Corvette and Silverado pulling out of the driveway.

A couple houses down the same street, it was discovered three vehicles were burglarized, with a revolver stolen from one of them.

The victim from the home burglary realized an iPad mini was among the items missing. Using the “Find my iPad” feature, he tracked the device to the area of 3221 S. Atlantic Ave. in Daytona Beach Shores. VCSO detectives and several detectives with the Daytona Beach Shores Department of Public Safety converged on the hotel at that address and spotted the stolen Corvette. While they conducted surveillance on it, another car pulled into the spot next to it. Five people got out and went into a hotel room. When detectives ran the tag on that car, a white Hyundai, it also came back as stolen out of Daytona Beach.

The five people left the room and tried to leave in the stolen Hyundai, but they were taken into custody in the parking lot and brought in for questioning. Shaw, the 19-year-old, was armed with a concealed semi-automatic handgun, and Barker, the 14-year-old, was armed with a concealed .22 revolver at the time.

The other three people were juveniles who provided consistent stories; it was determined they weren’t involved in the crimes. Those three juveniles were later released to their parents.

A search warrant was executed in the hotel room, where several items of evidence were located linking Shaw and Barker to the burglary case. A .44 magnum was also recovered and determined to be stolen from New Smyrna Beach. 

The search of the two stolen vehicles also led to the discovery of evidence tying the suspects to the burglary – including the shotgun taken from the house. 

Shaw was charged with: Armed Burglary of an Occupied Dwelling, three counts of Grand Theft Auto, Carrying a Concealed Firearm, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Possession of a Weapon or Ammunition by a Convicted Felon and Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor. 

Barker was charged with one count of Grand Theft Auto, Possession of a Firearm by a Minor and Carrying a Concealed Firearm.
