Sheriff's Promotions Include Highest-Ranking Female Deputy

SHERIFF’S PROMOTIONS INCLUDE HIGHEST-RANKING FEMALE DEPUTY

Sheriff Mike Chitwood continued re-shaping the organizational structure this week of the more than 900-employee agency by molding the department into two operating divisions headed by newly-established division chiefs. The moves, formalized during a staff meeting Wednesday morning, included the promotion of Corey Piser, now the highest-ranking female deputy in the history of the Sheriff’s Office. Also promoted Wednesday was Tim Morgan, who will team up with Piser as the agency’s two division chiefs. Division Chief is the third highest rank in the department, after Sheriff and Chief Deputy.

Sheriff Chitwood also promoted a new lieutenant on Wednesday, Anthony Shank, and two new sergeants -- Joseph Frost and Roy Galarza. “One thing I’ve learned in my first five months here as the Sheriff is that there are an awful lot of outstanding men and women in this organization,” Sheriff Chitwood said during Wednesday’s ceremony at the Deputy Stephen Saboda Training Center in Daytona Beach. “And today, we’re going to promote some of those talented people into a different rank, as they assume positions of leadership and continue to move this organization forward.”

The 41-year-old Piser was hired by the Sheriff’s Office in March 2004 after a 9-year career with the Daytona Beach Police Department. At the Sheriff’s Office, she has served in patrol, worked as a field training officer and watch commander. As Division Chief of the Support Operations Division, Piser will oversee special operations, training, court services, extraditions, warrants, information technology, communications, evidence and fleet management. Piser served in the Florida Army National Guard and is completing her master’s degree at Southern New Hampshire University. Morgan, 48, started with the Sheriff’s Office in December 2000, working in a variety of assignments that include patrol, SWAT, crime suppression, internal affairs and district commander. As Division Chief of the Law Enforcement Operations Division, Morgan will oversee the agency’s districts along with narcotics and investigations. Morgan also came to the Sheriff’s Office with prior law enforcement experience from the Daytona Beach Police Department, Youngstown Police Department in Ohio and Westminster Police Department in Colorado. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Keiser University, is a graduate of the Southern Police Institute’s Command Officers Development Class and served in the U.S. Air Force.

In comments Wednesday, both Piser and Morgan emphasized their plans to use their new positions to make sure that employees get the support they need to do their jobs and be successful. “I look forward to serving you in this position,” Piser told the assembled audience of co-workers. “I will do my very best -- I’ll work tirelessly -- to make this a better workplace for you. You’re in my heart.”

Added Morgan: “I’d like to thank the Sheriff and I’d like to thank the Chief Deputy for entrusting me with the business of this agency. I’m a deputy at heart, and I’m here to take care of the deputies.”

The changes will take effect on Saturday.
