Sheriff Johnson Promotes New Captain, Lieutenant

Erik Eagan was never content to simply sit back and delegate.

In his 25½-year career with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, Eagan has always been more of a working boss -- a hands-on supervisor who earns the respect and confidence of subordinates with his leadership by example style. And with his new rank and new assignment, Eagan -- promoted to captain this week -- now has an approximately 35-member staff to infuse with his brand of enthusiasm and work ethic. Also tapped for promotion this week by Sheriff Ben Johnson was his newest lieutenant, George Maddox. Both promotions took place during a well-attended ceremony Tuesday morning at the Sheriff’s Office’s Deputy Stephen Saboda Training Center in Daytona Beach. “It’s an honor and a pleasure to present you with your captain’s badge,” Sheriff Johnson told Captain Eagan. “You’ve done a great job and worked hard to get it.”

Eagan started his law enforcement career with the Sheriff’s Office in May 1989. Along the way, he has served in a variety of assignments and earned a reputation for his initiative, motivation and courteous, professional approach to the job. His past assignments have included road patrol, traffic enforcement, criminal investigations, narcotics, court services, extraditions, homeland security and internal affairs. He also served as the assistant commander of the Sheriff’s Office’s law enforcement operations in Deltona. In his new assignment, Eagan is commanding the Sheriff’s Office’s law enforcement operations for the unincorporated area of DeLand and the rest of Volusia’s northwest quadrant, all the way up to the Putnam County line. He leads a staff of 33 sworn and one civilian employee. A native of New Haven, Conn., Eagan has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Organizational Management from Warner Southern College. Before joining the Sheriff’s Office, Eagan served as a captain and training officer for Volusia County Fire Services. He replaces the former district commander, Captain Charlie Brown, who has been re-assigned to head up the Sheriff’s Office’s Investigative Services section. The vacancy in Investigative Services is the result of the impending retirement of Captain John Bonnevier, the second-longest serving active member of the agency. He retires this week after a 36½-year career.

Lieutenant Maddox brings 19 years of experience with the Sheriff’s Office to his new role as a nighttime watch commander. Maddox has spent nearly his entire career with the Sheriff’s Office in road patrol, including 10 years as a patrol deputy and field training officer and 9 years as a patrol Sergeant. He also served stints in judicial services, community services and communications. And he has earned a reputation as a law enforcement officer with a knack for problem-solving and the skills and experience to enforce the law fairly and firmly. “You’re a real credit to our agency,” Sheriff Johnson told Maddox.

A DeLand native, Maddox has an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Keiser University and also is a graduate of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Leadership Academy. Maddox began his law enforcement career with the Daytona Beach Police Department, where he served for about a year before joining the Sheriff’s Office in July 1995.
