PORT ORANGE MAN CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED FIRST DEGREE MURDER

On October 1, 2020 at 08:25 am, Port Orange Police Department officers responded to a traffic crash and shooting at the intersection of Charles St. and Ridgewood Ave. This incident stemmed from a rolling domestic disturbance that began at the Legacy at Crystal Lake apartment complex, located at 1200 Floral Springs Blvd. in Port Orange.

The victim reported that shortly before 08:20am on the morning of October 1, she was physically attacked and had a knife held to her throat by her boyfriend, Patrick Ryan O’Cain, a 25-year-old male who resided with her in the same apartment.

After the victim was able to escape and flee the apartment in her vehicle, she called 911 and reported that O’Cain was chasing her in his vehicle. After the vehicles headed northbound on Clyde Morris, they turned eastbound onto Reed Canal Rd. At this point, both South Daytona officers as well as Port Orange officers were moving to intercept the two vehicles. As the vehicles approached the intersection of Charles St. and Ridgewood Ave. the victim advised O’Cain rammed her vehicle several times causing it to spin out of control. O’Cain’s vehicle then traveled a short distance past the victim’s and struck a light pole. Immediately after crashing, the victim advised O’Cain pointed a black handgun in her direction and fired a round into her vehicle, which struck her in the left shoulder. Nearby officers quickly arrived on scene and were able to safely secure O’Cain (and the hangun) as well as render aid to the victim. Both the victim as well as O’Cain were transported to Halifax hospital with non life threatening injuries.

Patrick O’Cain was charged with the following:

  • Attempted First Degree Murder (Firearm)
  • Shooting of a Deadly Missle (Projection of a dangerous object at a vehicle)
  • Aggravated Assault w/deadly weapon (w/o intent to kill)
  • Aggravated Battery of a Person using a deadly weapon

O’Cain was transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail with NO BOND.
