PORT ORANGE POLICE DEPARTMENT RECEIVES $12,000 DUI GRANT 

The Port Orange Police Department has been awarded a $12,000.00 grant through the Florida Department of Transportation for DUI and Impaired Driving enforcement. According to statistics shared by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), a person is injured every 2 minutes and a person is killed every 51 minutes in DUI related crashes.
 
As part of the enforcement effort, POPD officers, with specialized training in detection and apprehension of impaired driving, will conduct 3 DUI checkpoints within the City of Port Orange. These locations and times will be determined based on the statistical analysis of previous crashes and DUI arrests. POPD will also conduct monthly saturation patrols in the city focusing on drunk and impaired driving. The grant monies received from FDOT will be used to cover the over-time costs for the officers to staff the check points and saturation patrols. In addition to our enforcement efforts, POPD will conduct a public awareness campaign with the hopes of deterring those who may make the choice to drive impaired. This campaign will include traditional media initiatives along with the use of social media and other creative endeavors.

As a home to more than 60,000 residents and countless visitors each day, it is the goal of the Port Orange Police Department to reduce instances of drunk and impaired driving to ensure the greatest level of safety and quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
