DeLAND POLICE OFFICER CREATES ACTIVITY SHEET FOR AREA CHILDREN

When School Resource Officer William Cooper was challenged by his supervisor to come up with a program that would connect with the youth in the community, he looked to his own family for an idea.

"I know they like to draw, color and play games with each other," Officer Cooper said of his three children.

So he found a way to combine all of those activities.

Cooper, who was recently assigned as the School Resource Officer for DeLand Middle School, came up with a DeLand Police activity sheet that will teach children about words associated with police departments but also allow them to color and play games.

The activity sheet, which was designed in partnership with the DeLand High School after-school computer club, has a crossword puzzle, three Tic-tac-toe games and a police car and canine for kids to color. The Publix, located at Country Club Corners Shopping Center, donated crayons to go along with the activity sheets and MBi donated 5,000 copies for officers to hand out while on patrol.

"This is a great way for our officers to connect with the community and it will give our youth a way to have a positive interaction with our officers," said Police Chief Jason Umberger. "I want to commend Officer Cooper for coming up with this idea and hope other officers follow his lead in finding innovative ways to connect with our residents."
