MOTORCYCLIST KILLED IN EARLY MORNING CRASH

A motorcycle operator was killed early this morning as the result of a single-vehicle crash in the 2900 block of South Atlantic Avenue. Officers responded to the area of South Atlantic and Oceans West Boulevard around 2 a.m. when nearby residents called to report the crash.

Arriving officers found the 21-year-old Colton Butterfield had been ejected from his motorcycle. Butterfield was in cardiac arrest, and resuscitative efforts were performed, but were ultimately unsuccessful. Butterfield was a student at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and enlisted in the U. S. Army.

Investigators believe the bike was travelling at an extremely high rate of speed when the operator failed to negotiate a curve and left the roadway, multiple utility poles.
