BURN VICTIM FLOWN TO ORMC

Public Safety Officers of the Daytona Beach Shores Department of Public Safety and  EVAC ambulance service responded to the Silver Sands Motel, located at 2119 South Atlantic Avenue, around 11:15 a.m. today in reference to a subject with severe burns.  Upon arrival they found a 60 year-old female resident who had attempted to light a cigarette while using oxygen, causing a fireball that burned her face and arm.  The resulting 2nd and 3rd degree burns covered approximately 10% of her body.

The woman’s roommate told responders that the incident had happened around 3 a.m., and he called 911 when she began suffering respiratory distress.

Due to the severity and location of the burns, Volusia County Sheriff’s Office Air One responded to the scene.  They transported the victim to Orland Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Because of privacy concerns, the name of the victim will not be released.
