Dave Shaw Named School Resource Deputy Of The Year

Students at Campbell Middle School in Daytona Beach know Volusia County Sheriff’s deputy Dave Shaw as a firm, but fair law enforcer, a mentor, calming influence and friend when needed all rolled into one. Principal Craig Zablo describes the school resource deputy assigned to Campbell Middle this way: “Victims feel that he can be trusted and that Deputy Shaw has their best interest at heart. Those that create problems know that Deputy Shaw can’t be fooled.”

Zablo’s accolades were contained in a recent award nomination letter that resulted in deputy Shaw’s selection as Volusia County’s School Resource Deputy of the Year for the 2012-13 school year. The selection was announced last week and was accompanied by a plaque, gifts and balloons for Shaw, a Volusia County deputy for nearly 19 years. A closely guarded secret each year, the selection was announced at the school on Friday after a surprised Shaw was summoned to the conference room at Campbell Middle.

The administration at the school credits Shaw with a wealth of law enforcement experience, a great reputation and a strong knowledge of the community and its residents that makes him well-suited to his assignment on the school campus. He works well with the staff and parents, attends school functions and can always be counted on to assist with thorny situations, they said. “Over the years I have had the opportunity to work with many highly qualified and talented School Resource Deputies, and Deputy Shaw is without a doubt, one of the best,” Principal Zablo wrote in his nomination letter. “Deputy Shaw cares about this community, our school and most importantly our students.”

Linda Huger, a teacher at Campbell Middle School, also had words of praise for deputy Shaw, saying he seeks alternative solutions when appropriate to resolve situation while teaching students about the consequences of their actions. In the past, she said, Shaw has “used fatherly interaction and inspired the students to understand that there are other options available to them to result in them doing the right thing.”

Shaw, who also splits his time at the Riverview Learning Center in Daytona Beach, has been with the Sheriff’s Office since August 1993.
