4-year-old, mom injured by reported accidental gunshot in Deltona

A 4-year-old girl and her mother were injured by gunshot this morning in Deltona when the dad reported he accidentally discharged his handgun.

Deputies responded to the home on Boxelder Street around 9:50 a.m. Saturday. When deputies arrived, the father was carrying the 4-year-old girl, who had obvious injuries to her chest and arm. Her mother was found inside the home with a towel on her gunshot wound to her leg.

Both mom and daughter were conscious and alert. Deputies provided emergency trauma care and applied tourniquets to both victims, as well as a chest seal on the child. EMS then arrived to take over treatment.

The child was airlifted to Orlando Health Arnold Palmer by Air One, and the wife was taken to HCA Florida Lake Monroe Hospital.

The father told deputies he was getting ready to go to the shooting range when the gun went off as he was attempting to clear it, with one shot striking both victims. The investigation is still active at this time.
