Sheriff's Office Employees Of The Quarter Honored
 

Standard job descriptions are merely the starting point for the men and women of the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office who earned the honor of being named Employees of the 3rd Quarter of 2013 Tuesday morning. Every one of them go far above and beyond what their jobs are supposed to entail, including a K-9 unit deputy well known for his commitment and leadership, and an investigator and civilian management specialist who teamed up to create a first of its kind conference in central Florida. Also getting awards from Sheriff Ben Johnson at the Deputy Stephen Saboda Training Center in Daytona Beach were a telecommunicator, and a volunteer chaplain.

Deputy of the quarter Mike Webb devotes a lot of attention to the K-9 Unit as an instructor and those skills he imparts to other K-9 handlers are earned through his devoted work in the field. He responded to an armed robbery incident in Ormond Beach in August during which the suspects had crashed their vehicle and fled on foot. Before he even got on the scene, Webb used his extensive knowledge of the area and his experience with the past practices of suspects fleeing in the same area to direct units via radio to the areas they would be most effective. When he arrived on scene, he continued directing the many resources on hand, including K-9 teams from other agencies, until all of the suspects were in custody. A month later Webb responded to another incident in which the suspects fled from a crashed car, this time in DeLand. Despite having already worked nearly 12 hours already, he assisted in the search and provided security for a bloodhound team.

"You can be sure any time he arrives on scene you are getting the very best our agency has to offer," said fellow K-9 handler deputy Brett Whitson in a letter nominating Webb for the deputy of the quarter honor.

Investigator of the quarter Josh Mott of the Major Case Crime Scene Unit saw that there was a need for training and collaboration within the Crime Scene and Death Investigation communities of central Florida. Mott worked side by side with the employee of the quarter, management specialist Amanda Jillisky, to make the first ever "Death and Crime Scene Investigation Conference" a reality. The conference brought some of the most respected and proficient professionals in death investigations to the Daytona Beach area for the one-day seminar.

The pair's supervisor, Lt. Paul Kammerer, had glowing praise for them in his letters nominating them for the awards. "Few employees can maintain such a positive attitude, under such an ever-increasing workload, and Amanda does," he said. "And Investigator Mott's efforts during this conference are simply the by-product of a very motivated, knowledgeable and valued member of the Volusia County Sheriff's Office."

Telecommunicator of the quarter Denesha Miller discovered that law enforcement officers in the field were having a hard time finding certain radio channels that are used for communication with other counties in mutual aid incidents. Miller volunteered to take on the task of creating an easy to understand presentation that now gives officers a better understanding of what they can do with their radios, when to request the activation of certain options and where to find the options on their radios. The knowledge gained from Miller's presentation not only makes the jobs of all people involved in multi-agency incidents easier but also makes everyone safer.

"You do a great job under trying times," said Sheriff Johnson at the awards ceremony.

Volunteer of the quarter Pastor Mike Carroll serves as the associate pastor for a large local community church; however, he still finds times to volunteer his services as Senior Chaplain for the Sheriff's Office. Not only does he coordinate the Sheriff's Office's chaplain program, he routinely makes himself available to respond at all hours of the day or night. He assists with death notifications, attends briefings, rides with deputies during their patrols to get to know them and is ready to serve whenever and wherever he can. He was instrumental in the success of a recent West Volusia Police Athletic League community safety event that distributed school supplies to over 1,000 students.
