MAN KILLED IN APPARENT ACCIDENT AT TOMOKA LANDFILL

A man working as a traffic controller at the Tomoka Landfill west of Port Orange was killed Wednesday in an apparent accident.

Deputies responded to the landfill at 1990 Tomoka Farms Road around 10:15 a.m. Wednesday after employees reported the accident. The deceased, a 57-year-old man working to show customers where to dump their materials, appeared to have been run over by a bulldozer operating in the area.

There were no witnesses to the accident itself, and the deceased was discovered by a customer walking past the site.

While the identity of the deceased has been confirmed, he has limited known family in the area, and next of kin has not been located or notified of his death. He was not a Volusia County employee, but a day laborer at the landfill. His identity is not being released pending notification of next of kin. The death investigation remains active, but there are no charges at this point in what appears to have been a tragic accident.
