HERITAGE MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT ARRESTED AFTER BRINGING UNLOADED GUN TO SCHOOL

A student at Heritage Middle School has been charged with possession of a weapon on school property after he brought a handgun with no magazine to school and showed another student.

The 13-year-old Deltona boy was arrested Tuesday afternoon after a parent of the witness student learned of the Monday incident and reported it.

In an interview with the witness, he told a deputy that during 3rd period class, the defendant asked him if he wanted to see something cool, then reached into his backpack and showed him the handgun.

The boy told deputies he brought the gun to school Monday because he was being bullied, but he had no intentions of hurting anyone. He said he got the gun from his parents’ bedroom closet and removed the magazine from it for safety.

The parents told deputies they always store the gun in a locked bedroom closet, but it must have been inadvertently left unlocked in this case. The weapon was collected as evidence along with another handgun stored in the same closet, and the 13-year-old defendant was transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice.
