Being a School Resource Deputy (SRD) is unlike any other assignment in law enforcement.

First and foremost, SRDs enforce the law to help maintain a safe and orderly learning environment on middle and high school campuses around the county. But the job is so much more. School Resource Deputies are a unique blend of law enforcement officer, teacher, counselor, friend, adviser, mediator, moderator, mentor and school volunteer all rolled into one. And during the school year about to end in Volusia County, no one did the job better than Volusia County Sheriff’s deputy Robb Campbell. Seabreeze High School nominated Campbell for the award, which was announced Tuesday. The 2010-11 school year in Volusia ends on Friday.

Seabreeze administrators praised Campbell for his commitment to safety and his efforts to help guide students in their path to success while maintaining a strong relationship and positive rapport with the extended school community. “Deputy Campbell is truly a proactive campus leader, continually apprising our campus staff of security and safety issues, investigating leads and tips and actively pursuing the best interests of our campus,” Jacalyn Jones, an assistant principal at Seabreeze, wrote in her letter of nomination. “He has exemplified outstanding leadership, a commitment to the safety of our school community and a commitment to law enforcement education in order to become an even more effective protector of our campus.”

The 44-year-old Campbell has been with the Sheriff’s Office since October 2005. He previously served in road patrol and court security. This is Campbell’s second year as a School Resource Deputy, covering both Seabreeze High School in Daytona Beach and Ormond Beach Middle School. Administrators noted that Campbell’s dedication includes frequent attendance at sporting events and other extracurricular events. “I can unequivocally attest to the fact that Deputy Campbell is deserving of this special recognition as Volusia County SRD of the year,” said Jones.

Sheriff Ben Johnson also added his words of praise. “I’m very proud of Robb and the positive image he projects in his dealings with students, parents and educators,” said Sheriff Johnson. “He’s a terrific role model, and I appreciate the School District recognizing his efforts. It certainly was a very well deserved award.”
