SUSPECT ARRESTED IN 2 DAYTONA-AREA ARMED ROBBERIES

A suspect who fired a shot during a recent armed robbery of a Daytona-area convenience store has been arrested, confessing to that case along with a second robbery in Daytona Beach.

The Nov. 23 robbery at Kelly’s Food Mart, 1000 Derbyshire Road, was reported around 1:30 p.m. The employee working the register described a masked suspect who came behind the counter, showed a firearm in his waistband, prevented her from escaping, took her phone and told her to be quiet or else he’d hurt her.

The suspect took cash and other items, then left just as the store owner was coming through the door. The owner began to follow after him until the suspect turned, pulled out the gun and fired one shot at the building. The owner ducked and fled back inside when the bullet hit the wall near him.

Store surveillance cameras captured video of the suspect and his vehicle (a white Hyundai Santa Fe), which was also caught by other cameras in the area.

One spent 9mm shell casing was found at the scene.

Analysts at the Volusia County Crime Center identified the vehicle and its registered owner, and detectives worked with the Daytona Beach Police Department to contact the owner at her home in Daytona Beach. When police showed up at the address, the SUV was parked outside, and the owner’s 18-year-old son Cameo Reid (DOB 6/22/2005) answered the door. He appeared to match the description provided by the convenience store employee.

The investigation continued, and on Tuesday, members of DBPD’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) conducted a traffic stop on the Hyundai Santa Fe, with Reid at the wheel. Hanging from the turn signal, police found a distinct black-and-white covid mask that matched one used in another convenience-store robbery Monday at 1096 Mason Ave. Reid was arrested on unrelated charges (driving with a suspended license) and brought in for an interview.

During the interview, Reid confessed to both robberies (one in VSO’s jurisdiction and one in DBPD’s). He also confessed to firing a shot at the Kelly’s Food Mart owner to scare him, not to kill him.

Reid was charged with attempted felony murder, armed robbery, kidnapping, and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony, in addition to his Daytona PD charges of armed robbery. Daytona Beach detectives executed a search warrant at his address and recovered a 9mm handgun hidden in a toilet. The rounds in the magazine were the same brand as the shell casing recovered from the scene at Kelly’s Food Mart.

Reid is being held without bond at the Volusia County Branch Jail as of this posting.
