Sheriff Johnson Promotes New Captain

As a lieutenant, Charlie Brown has been a familiar face at the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office’s Northwest Volusia-based district headquarters in DeLand. A 16-year veteran with the Sheriff’s Office, Brown has served the last year and a half as assistant district commander in DeLand. But as of this week, Brown is no longer second-in-command there. Following his promotion on Tuesday to captain, Brown has taken over command of the Sheriff’s Office’s law enforcement operations for the unincorporated area of DeLand and the rest of Volusia’s northwest quadrant, all the way up to the Putnam County line. “I’m very proud of you, Charlie,” Sheriff Ben Johnson told Captain Brown during a promotion ceremony Tuesday morning in Daytona Beach. “This is something you’ve earned.”

The 44-year-old Brown started with the Sheriff’s Office in February 1997. He has a bachelor’s degree in organizational management from Warner Southern College and has served in previous assignments with the Sheriff’s Office that included patrol, court services, civil and watch commander. He also previously served as a school resource deputy at Spruce Creek High School in Port Orange. In his new assignment, which he began on Saturday, Captain Brown oversees patrol and investigations for the Sheriff’s Office’s northwest district. It’s a job that Captain Brown said he goes into with high expectations and great excitement. “You’ve worked real hard to get here, Charlie,” remarked Sheriff Johnson. “I look forward to many more good years from you.”

Meanwhile, Captain Brown’s promotion and reassignment have prompted additional personnel moves at the Sheriff’s Office. Captain Brown is replacing Captain Brian Bosco, who has assumed command of the Sheriff’s Office’s Northeast Volusia law enforcement operations based out of Holly Hill. And Captain Bosco takes over for the former district commander, Captain John Bonnevier, who has been reassigned as commander of Investigative Services.
