SELF-DEFENSE AWARENESS PROGRAM FOR WOMAN RETURNS IN 2019

The Orange City Police Department will resume the Self-Defense Awareness Program for women beginning in January 2019. The goal is to host one class each month. The following dates have been selected for the first six classes of 2019:  Sat. Jan. 12, 2019, Sat. Feb. 16, 2019, Sat. Mar. 16, 2019, Sat. Apr. 13, 2019, Sat. May 11, 2019 and Sat. June 22, 2019.  All classes will be held from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Orange City Council Chambers located at 201 N. Holly Avenue.

Self- Awareness and Familiarization Exchange or S.A.F.E. is a unique course designed to provide women with personal safety information and an introduction to the physical aspects of self-defense. S.A.F.E. is a 2-hour class and teaches that 90% of self-defense is awareness, risk reduction and avoiding confrontation, while only 10% is physical. The program is taught by Orange City Police Department S.A.F.E. certified instructors. “Taking responsibility and educating yourself is the first step in staying safe. Violent crimes are crimes of opportunity, and when you remove the element of opportunity, you reduce the risk of attack. This program is based upon this concept and the S.A.F.E. program is an additional police department effort to stop violence against women,” said Orange City Deputy Police Chief Wayne M. Miller.

S.A.F.E. classes are two (2) hours long and class size is limited to 25 participants. Classes are only open to women. Participants must be at least 15 years of age; participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. There is no charge to attend. This is a public event and photos will be taken during the class.

Register for any of the above class dates by contacting Sergeant Rolly Cavida at rcavida@ourorangecity.com or 386-851-7561.
