Orlando Man Charged With Felony Child Abuse

ORLANDO MAN CHARGED WITH FELONY CHILD ABUSE
On June 19th, 2018 at approximately 9:45 PM, Orange City Police Officer attempted to stop a 2016 Hyundai sport utility vehicle, driven by Alexandre Correa Da-Silva of Orlando (DOB 01-09-1988), for speeding; driving 65 mph in a posted 40 mph zone. As the officer attempted a traffic stop, Correa Da-Silva took evasive action and started driving recklessly by weaving in and out of traffic. Correa Da-Silva turned into a parking lot in the 800 block of Volusia Avenue. Due to the one way entry/exit of the parking area, he was unable to elude the officer any further. He was subsequently taken into custody and arrested. He was charged with DUI, fleeing and eluding and resisting arrest without violence.
As officers were involved with the above traffic arrest, other Orange City officers were in the 300 block of Ohio Avenue investigating a narcotics complaint which also involved Correa Da-Silva and his girlfriend. Further investigation revealed Correa Da-Silva had just left his girlfriend’s house when he was observed speeding. An argument concerning narcotic use at the residence between Correa Da-Silva and his girlfriend over him allegedly providing her 10-year-old son with some narcotics. Investigation at the residence determined Correa Da-Silva’s girlfriend came home from work to find Correa Da-Silva passed out on the bed with pills lying next to him. Her 10-year-old son told her mother that Correa Da-Silva had provided him “medicine” earlier that day and that it tasted bad. Correa Da-Silva advised the child it was “Tum’s”. The child initially spit out the pill due to the poor taste. Correa Da-Silva told the juvenile to place another pill on a nacho chip to help with the taste and swallow it. Correa Da-Silva then told the child and his sister to go to bed.
Additional investigation by officers determined the pills found on the bed belonging to Correa Da-Silva in fact were Xanax. Officers from the residence responded to the traffic stop location to interview Correa Da-Silva. He confessed to giving the child Xanax and apologized, stating he just wanted the child to “Chill” as the child was on a “sugar rush” eating chocolate. As Correa Da-Silva was already in custody for the aforementioned traffic charges, he was additionally charged with Felony Child Abuse for providing the juvenile with a narcotic. Correa Da-Silva was transported to the Orange City Police Department for processing and subsequently to the Volusia County Branch Jail on a No Bond Status for the four aforementioned charges.
