PORT ORANGE MAN ARRESTED FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER

At 04:07pm on November 29, 2020 Port Orange Police officers made contact with a male who stated that he found a bullet hole in the driver’s side door of his SUV. The male advised that the vehicle was being driven by his son, during this incident and that the person who fired at the vehicle was a known acquaintance of his son, Dalton Ames (age 19).

At approximately 02:00am on 11/29/20, the victim along with two other teenage females decided to meet at Ames’s residence in Port Orange (755 Tumblebrook Dr.). While Ames, the victim driver, and two females were hanging out around 02:00am on 11/29/20, Ames produced a semi-automatic pistol and began to play with the gun in front of the group. The juvenile female advised that Ames began waving the gun around and posing with the gun while taking pictures. Eventually, Ames began to point the gun in the direction of the victim.

After becoming uncomfortable with Ames’s behavior, the group decided to leave the residence. At this point, two other males arrived at the residence and the female decided to ride in the vehicle with the two males, instead of riding in the same vehicle as Ames. While leaving Ames’s house, Ames became irate and began yelling at the male driver of the SUV because the juvenile female decided to ride with the two males. Feeling uncomfortable with Ames’s behavior, the male driver decided to bring Ames back to his residence. When the pair arrived back at Ames’s residence, Ames exited the vehicle and went into his home. Ames then emerged from the residence and fired two rounds at the vehicle as the victim was driving away.

Based on the circumstances of the incident, a search warrant was obtained for Ames’s residence to locate the firearm. On 11/30/2020, at 12:04 am, the Port Orange Police Department Emergency Response Team accompanied by members of the Criminal Investigation Division were able to take Ames into custody at his residence.

Ames was arrested and charged with the following crimes:

  • Criminal mischief
  • Violation of Probation (Ames was on probation for a prior incident of Fleeing and eluding involving POPD)
  • Tampering with evidence
